Boy trips over, discovers fossil more than 1 million years old”

It was only the second complete stegomastodon skull found in New Mexico. "We have the unique opportunity to really compare what the animal looks like a much larger complete scale and compare it with others", said Professor Peter Houde.

The family were out testing their walkie-talkies when 9-year-old Sparks tripped and fell onto an unusual object protruding from the ground.

In the USA, a child found the skull of an ancestor of the elephant that lived millions of years ago.

In the United States, 10-year-old boy from new Mexico Jude sparks all of a sudden made a major archaeological discovery: during a country trip with his family the boy came across a skull of an ancestor of the elephant that lived on Earth millions of years ago.

"I was running farther up and I tripped on part of the tusk", said Sparks.

"For the several types of elephants that we have in the area, this is probably one of the more common of them".

At first, Sparks and his family thought it might be fossilized wood, The New York Times reports, but soon suspected it might be a bone.

"The upper part of the skull is deceiving".

After Houde found out about the fossils, he and the Sparks family covered them back up, while he worked to get funding and permission to excavate them properly.

"They existed during a time when it was wetter and cooler", Houde said, National Geographic reported. What makes this story even more interesting is the 10-year-old local boy who made the rare discovery.

"In fact when the sediments are removed from the sides of them, they start to fall apart immediately and literally fall into tiny, tiny bits".

"I just knew it was not something that you usually find", he said, the NYT reported. NMSU geology major Danielle Peltier assisted with painstaking process of gently brushing the last bits of dirt from the skull and tusk and applying chemical hardeners to ensure the ancient bones remained intact.
