Chennai Open renamed Maharashtra Open, to be held in Pune — ATP”

India's only ATP Tour level event, the Chennai Open, has officially been cancelled, AITA (All India Tennis Association) officials have confirmed.

IMG (R) is a joint venture between IMG, which owns the ATP sanction for the Chennai Open, and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Group.

India have been struggling badly to host even ATP Challenger tournaments.

The annual Chennai Open ATP tennis tournament, which had doubts cast over its 2018 edition, has been cancelled.

It has been learnt that IMG, the owners of the tournament, were considering to take the event out of the country but is likely to settle for Pune as the next hosts.

"TNTA had told IMGR that they should find a title sponsor for Chennai Open in 2018 & TNTA would raise the balance funds with the help of the Tamil Nadu Government & other local sponsors and would live up to its obligations under the contract to conduct Chennai Open until 2019".

The reason is surprising since the Tamil Nadu government has been supporting the event for long and IMG had even extended the contract with TNTA for three more years recently. "Hence, I request Hon'ble Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy to take immediate actions to ensure that the association of the City of Chennai with the ATP Tennis Open stays alive", Stalin said.

According to PTI, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association official said that it can not "meet the commerical demands" of IMG, who are the main organisers of the event. "We are premier state association and will remain", the TNTA official asserted.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra celebrated the move to shift the tournament to Pune.

The Chennai Open became an important fixture on India's worldwide sporting calendar, drawing top players from across the world for 21 years.

Many of them, including 14-time Grand Slam men's singles champion Rafael Nadal of Spain who has often spoken about its importance in his journey to World No. 1, had made it their first stop every year.

India's Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi forged their formidable partnership at the Chennai Open, before they went on to conquer the world.

Attended by some of tennis' top ranked players, the Chennai Open has in the past seen 2016 US Open champion and three-time Grand Slam victor Stan Wawrinka win four titles here, most recently in 2016, with 2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic also a two-time victor here.
