Over 100 Million Americans have Diabetes or Prediabetes — CDC

Over 100 Million Americans have Diabetes or Prediabetes — CDC”

Nearly one-third of the USA population - 100 million people - either has diabetes or its precursor condition, known as pre-diabetes, said a government report Tuesday.

The CDC estimates 30.3 million people have diabetes (9.4 percent of Americans), with 7.2 million now undiagnosed. The agency noted that the condition could escalate to diabetes within five years when left untreated.

More and more Americans may be in need of this insulin pen and other diabetes treatment methods, as an increasing number of adults are diagnosed as diabetic or prediabetic, according to a new CDC report. However, the disease continues to represent a growing health problem: Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.in 2015. For the first time, the newly released report contains county-level data, which shows that a few areas of the county possess a heavier diabetes burden than others.

"Diabetes and prediabetes remain serious threats for more than one-third of Americans―the statistics are staggering", said the American Diabetes Association's chief scientific, medical, and mission officer Dr. William T. Cefalu in a statement. More than a third of USA adults have prediabetes, and the majority don't know it.

Diabetes, overall, can be easily managed through diet and exercise in order to control one's A1C levels, which measures the amount of glucose, or blood sugar, in your blood stream.

Diabetes is a serious disease that doubles the risk of early death. The National Diabetes Statistics Report, released approximately every two years, provides information on diabetes prevalence and incidence, prediabetes, risk factors for complications, acute and long-term complications, mortality, and costs in the U.S.

That year alone, an estimated 1.5 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed among people ages 18 and older, it said. The map below shows where people with diabetes live across the USA, with the darker red shades representing areas where a larger percentage of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes. Almost 1 among 4 adults, who live with diabetes (7.4 million Americans) didn't know that they had the disease. Among adults ages 18 to 44, 4% had the condition, whereas, for those ages 45 - 64, the rate is 17% and for 65 years or above, it is increased to 25%.

Diabetes rates were also found higher in certain ethnic groups, or 15 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives, 13 percent for blacks, 12 percent for Hispanics, 8 percent for Asians, and 7.4 percent for whites. Adults with more than a high school education had the lowest rate - a little over 7 percent.
