Twitter says its anti-abuse efforts are working”

A sustained push to reduce abuse on Twitter has shown promising results, the company said, citing internal data suggesting the company is taking action on significantly more hostile accounts while reducing the amount of vitriol seen by users.

In a closed-door meeting with reporters from several outlets this week this week, Twitter said it's taking action against 10 times the number of accounts it did one year ago, and that it has suspended twice as many accounts in the last four months than it did in previous months. The company also touted, for the first time, statistics about its progress on combating abuse.

He added: "We are pleased to see Twitter continuing to meet the challenges of user safety and will continue our work with the Twitter Safety Team in addressing these important issues".

"Accounts that we put into this period of limited functionality generate 25pc fewer abuse reports, and approximately 65pc of these accounts are in this state just once". "These numbers will vary, but the approach is having a positive impact", it said.

Twitter's early promise as a social platform for connecting people the world over quickly turned somewhat sour, with harassment, bullying, and general nastiness becoming commonplace.

- saw a 40 percent reduction in blocks received from accounts that recently received mentions from an account that doesn't follow them. This week, Buzzfeed reported that users were upset that Twitter was ignoring obvious credible threats unless reported by celebrities or journalists. Numerous examples provided to BuzzFeed News appeared to be explicit violations of Twitter's rules, including one account with 899 tweets all targeted at a female sportswriter. That account remains active today.

That may be so, but for some Twitter users there's a profound lack of clarity around the company's harassment policies and their enforcement. Asked to explain why, after inquiries from the media, Twitter took action on a number of reports it initially dismissed, a company spokesperson offered a statement noting that Twitter has been "working hard to communicate with our users more transparently about safety". "So people who are threatened basically have no choice but to go to someone with a bigger platform".
