Iron Yard closing all campuses including Greenville code school

On July 21, 2017, the Greenville-based technology education company The Iron Yard announced it would cease operations and shut down all of its campuses. The for-profit coding school planned to close its doors after completing its remaining summer cohorts, with ongoing classes and career support continuing until those students finished. Board members described the move as a difficult decision.

According to reports at the time, the school operated 20 campuses in the United States, including locations in Atlanta, Austin, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Detroit, and Charlotte, where it had established a presence in 2015. It also operated one campus in the United Kingdom. The school, which began as an accelerator program, offered 12-week crash courses in software development and coding skills for $12,000. The curriculum was designed to address skills that the founders believed were lacking when the program began.

The Iron Yard was owned by the Apollo Education Group, an organization that also owned the University of Phoenix and other institutions. While the closure of the educational campuses was confirmed in an announcement on the company’s website, it remained unclear what the decision would mean for Iron Yard Ventures, the seed-stage investing arm of the coding school.
