Lady Hale becomes first woman president of UK Supreme Court

Lady Hale becomes first woman president of UK Supreme Court”

Lady Hale, 72, is likely to be confirmed by Downing Street on Friday (21 July) as the next Supreme Court president, the Times reported.

But it's not just Hale - who is believed to have heard over 500 appeals during her career - who's the feature of big Supreme Court news today.

She was of course the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court bench, and was too the first family judge to do the same. The legal marketplace welcomed the appointment.

The appointment of the former High Court judge was announced as three new Supreme Court justices and seven new justices for the Court of Appeal were unveiled. He has played an instrumental role in modernising the legal profession and judiciary to ensure it is fit for goal in the 21 century and has been strongly committed to increasing diversity within the profession to better reflect the society it serves and improving the use of technology in the justice system.

However, he went on to say that there was 'a very serious recruitment crisis and lack of judicial diversity affecting both our Civil and Criminal Courts, which appears to be worsening, with a shortfall in suitable candidates for two years in a row now.

"It is a great honour and a challenge to be appointed to succeed Lord Neuberger". It seems unlikely that it will be able to do so.

She added: "I look forward to building upon his pioneering achievements, including developing closer links with each part of the United Kingdom, for example by sitting outside London, and improving the ways in which we communicate our work to the public".

She will be officially sworn in on 2 October, when the UK's highest court will also welcome three new justices including a second female judge, Lady Justice Black.

Her legal career has been unconventional: she was a law professor at Manchester University for many years and did not...

Lord Thomas of Gresford said at the time that while Scotland and Northern Ireland had long-standing judicial systems, cases of Welsh law would "not be frequent" and did not require one of the 12 judges to be from Wales.

Lady Hale was made QC in 1989, and a High Court judge in 1994. She was founding editor of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law, and also authored a case book on "The Family, Law and Society".
