Google CEO Sundar Pichai joins Alphabet's board

Google CEO Sundar Pichai joins Alphabet's board”

Google CEO Sundar Pichai will join its parent Alphabet's (GOOGL) board of directors, becoming the 13th board member, the company announced on Monday.

The addition of Pichai adds another company officer to the board, which already includes Google co-founders Larry Page, now Alphabet CEO, and Sergey Brin, president, and chair and former CEO Eric Schmidt.

That split elevated Pichai to CEO and perhaps allowed him to institute a little more focus inside Google - he replaced skydiving hijinks with a quieter and more deliberate tone.

One other Google executive holds a seat on the board: Diane Greene, head of Google's cloud division. Joining Alphabet's board of directors is just yet another step in his ascension at the company, and naturally indicates how important the core Google business is to Alphabet as a whole. Greene joined the board before joining Google. The executive, who has worked at Google since 2004, earned a compensation package totalling $200 million in 2016.

Alphabet reports second-quarter results after the bell.

Sundar has been doing a great job as Google's CEO, driving strong growth, partnerships, and tremendous product innovation.

Pichai has been running the Google division since August 2015, when the company made a decision to separate its different businesses and name the parent company, Alphabet. He is also leading the search giant's transformation into an "AI-first" company.
