Person in wheelchair hit by vehicle in Madison Heights

Madison Heights police say Dequindre closed at 11 Mile after a man in a motorized scooter was hit by a vehicle.

Police said Johnson, who'd recently suffered a leg injury, had borrowed the scooter from a friend.

Johnson was taken to St. John Oakland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The nurse saw the crash and called 911, according to authorities.

The incident occurred early in the morning, just before 5 a.m., on Dequindre Road north of 11 Mile Road.

The victim in the motorized wheelchair was hit by a person driving an SUV around 6 a.m. Monday.

Police have questioned the driver of the vehicle, identified as a 24-year-old Sterling Heights man. It is believed he fell off the wheelchair and was struck by the vehicle. He later told police he did not see the victim before striking him.

Madison Police and the Madison Heights Fire Department headed to the scene.

Siladke said the driver is cooperating with investigators.
