Nigerian Troops, Oil Prospectors Ambushed By Boko Haram In Northern Borno”

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have kidnapped 10 members of a geological research team from the University of Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria, the state oil company, which contracted the work, said on Wednesday.

The secretary of the Hunters Association in Borno State, Bunu Bukar, says members of the self-defense group saw the bodies of military personnel after the ambush Tuesday.

He said of the ten vehicles that conveyed the workers to Magumeri, only one returned.

He did not specify the number of workers and security operatives unaccounted for.

The source said, "Five persons who escaped the ambush attack are now receiving medical attention at the Borno State Specialist Hospital".

Vanguard reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 25 when the oil workers who were working for a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation were ambushed by the terrorists.

The attack came barely three weeks after troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole (151 Battalion) discovered freshly dug holes prepared for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists.

On Monday, five suicide bombers attacked two internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Borno, killing seven people.
