Honda Investigating Another Death Possibly Tied To Takata Airbag

- A vehicle involved in a Pasco County fatal crash was equipped with the same airbags at the center of a massive recall.

The unidentified victim was in a 2002 Honda Accord when the crash happened and the driver's inflator ruptured.

The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. July 19 in Holiday, FL, when a 19-year-old in a Pontiac Firebird turned into the woman's path, WTSP10 reports. Barker died. Several passengers in her vehicle were injured. Officials said the airbags can explode from excess force, sending metal debris flying inside a auto.

Scott Caudill, chief operating officer of TK Holdings, Takata's USA unit, has said Takata recalled, or expected to recall, about 125 million vehicles worldwide by 2019, including more than 60 million in the United States. So far, 12 people have died in the United States in crashes linked to the recalled airbags. Ramon V. Kuffo, 81, of Miami, was using a hammer to work on his 2001 Honda Accord when the driver's side airbag exploded. But company records show the recall fix had not been made even though Honda says it has parts available.

If the death is confirmed to be a result of the Takata airbag rupture it would become the 13th in the US and 18th worldwide.

Honda said it has adequate replacement parts and urged owners "to seek fix as soon as possible", Reuters reported, adding that older vehicles, especially 2001-2003 Honda vehicles, pose the greatest safety risk.

The company says it also tried "numerous times" to reach the owners of the Accord by email and telephone.

The 2001 Accord has one of the most unsafe airbags, with as much as a 50 percent chance of exploding in a crash, the Associated Press reported.
