Trump rails against Senate rules in wake of health care defeat”

Just about every time Republicans in Congress failed to pass a version of the Affordable Care Act repeal, he reflexively advocated that they just stop trying.

Dial back to a Trump tweet from the campaign, February 9, 2016: "We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare - and nobody can do that like me". Then I would probably would say yes.

"I hope this is a turning point", Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer of NY, said Friday. "I turned out to be right". But after a failed vote early Friday in the Senate, it's not clear GOP leaders will be able to resuscitate the efforts.

McConnell called the most recent defeat "a disappointing moment".

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said in a statement that the Trump administration would pursue its health care goals through regulation. And still others said they have no idea what the next step should be, admitting that they've hit a dead end.

Attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act - aka Obamacare - crumbled after a surprise "no" vote from Sen.

Disappointment among Republicans and happiness among Democrats about the repeal's failure were palpable. She said she voted against the motion to proceed because based on her commitment to "the process".

For Mr McCain, who also hoped to shepherd a major defense bill through the Senate, his political and legislative tussles could now be interrupted by the more pressing need to treat his cancer.

John McCain, the veteran senator, dealt President Trump a stunning blow with a vote that derailed the Republican party's seven-year quest to reform healthcare. Trump has threatened to withhold those subsidies before-a move that insurers and health care providers warn would destabilize the individual health insurance market and cause premiums to soar.

"Republicans in the Senate will NEVER win if they don't go to a 51 vote majority NOW", Trump tweeted.

McCain, one of a few Trump critics in the GOP, told senators they were not the president's subordinates, "we are his equals".

The so-called "skinny repeal" legislation would, among other things, have ended the requirements that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a penalty, and that companies with 50 or more employees provide coverage to their workers.

McCain, of Arizona, was one of three Republican lawmakers, including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, who voted with Democrats in the 49-51 defeat of the Republican-led repeal effort.

Murkowski said she was ready to work with colleagues - "all of them" - to reform the health care system.

"If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly", Trump tweeted.

Despite leadership's messaging to put pressure on the Senate, Republicans say there aren't excuses for not having much to show after more than six months of across-the-board control of the federal government.

The second half of the missive indicates that Trump is going to continue to target his own GOP-controlled Congress for their inability to undo former President Obama's signature achievement.

Several conservatives voted to move the skinny bill forward in order to strip out more Obamacare mandates and taxes in a conference committee with the House. "They look like fools and are just wasting time".

That amendment was being written by Graham, Heller and Sen. He said the next vote could shift from repeal and replace to improving the Affordable Care Act instead.
