Blowing out birthday candles could be bad for your health. Here's why

Blowing out birthday candles could be bad for your health. Here's why”

Next time you blow out the candles on your birthday cake, make a wish for your good health, as scientists have found that the popular tradition causes bacteria on the icing to increase by 1,400%. It sounds shocking but is true.

A birthday cake isn't complete without the candles, but new research suggests that when you blow them out, you're spreading bacteria all over your dessert.

But while that might gross you out enough to put you off cake for life, the researchers say the majority of the bacteria is harmless. Whether benign or pathogenic, it is important to understand how bacteria are transferred and become familiar with measures for avoiding contamination.

He argued that if birthday cakes significantly contributed to spread deadly disease, it would've already been discouraged by now. To test this, researchers slathered icing on two fake birthday cakes and had people blow out the candles on one of them.

Bacteria are an unavoidable part of life, present in and on nearly everything humans contact but the researchers said that illnesses related to pathogenic bacteria, which can spread rapidly throughout the population, are a major public health concern in today's society.

Then they took a deep breath and blew out the candles - they collected frosting and spread it out on agar plates to watch the bacteria grow.
