Millennials and Generation Xers outvoted baby boomers in 2016

Millennials and Generation Xers outvoted baby boomers in 2016”

But what Pew Research Center discovered about the 2016 election that helps to explain why the Baby Boomer Generation was outvoted, has to do with more than things like death or emigration.

Baby boomers vs. millennials: It's the battle that has defined our decade.

While Cerulli believes that the older generation will be in the investment driving seat for at least another ten years, it warns that managers that have not started factoring in these differences risk disappearing from the radar of the millennials completely.

Asset managers who are not already preparing for the day when the millennial generation takes over the investment reins from the Baby Boomers will be at a distinct disadvantage, it may already be too late for some. The Census Bureau estimates members of Generation X will top out in 2018, before mortality rates begin to overtake growth fueled by immigration.

Millennials especially have the potential to boost their political clout by turning out in greater numbers. Just 49 percent of eligible voters from that generation voted in 2016, compared with 69 percent of eligible baby boomers. The researchers say that there were 35.7 million votes cast by consumers between the ages of 36 and 51 in November, with 63% of eligible voters reporting to their polling station.

"The Millennial population and the Millennial electorate, they're going to continue to grow in size".

"The shift has occurred as millennials accounted for a growing share of the electorate and as those in the Silent and Greatest Generations aged and died", said senior researcher Richard Fry. "We would expect their turnout to increase more as they mature".

In 2016, over half of Millennials identified as Democrats or Democratic leaning independents, and a small 33% identified as Republicans or Republican leaning independents.

The rise of the Millennial generation as a voting bloc raises hopes - and red flags - for Democrats.

"To the extent that they do turn out, they do tend to clearly lean Democratic", Fry said. That means those younger voters may be more susceptible to overtures from the other side of the aisle than their predecessors.
