NFL Hopes to Work With Players Union on Marijuana Use Study

NFL Hopes to Work With Players Union on Marijuana Use Study”

Today, we learned that the NFL, known for harboring anti-marijuana views, has made a decision to work with NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to study the potential benefits of marijuana for pain management.

The Patriots' veteran quarterback ranks at the top spot in NFL merchandise sales in a list compiled by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).

DeMaurice Smith, the president of the players' association, told the Washington Post in January that the union was working toward a proposal for a "less punitive" approach from the NFL.

This, of course, is not almost the first time the issue of marijuana as a pain reliever has come up for the NFL.

Before 2014, the National Football League considered any blood test with more than 15 nanograms (a nanogram is one-billionth of a gram) of THC to be positive and deserving a suspension. The league has previously indicated that it is studying marijuana as a pain management tool on its own. The NFL has been less open to the idea with commissioner Roger Goodell calling it "addictive" and "unhealthy" as recently as April.

"I think it's a debated question". So the NFLPA wisely has been persistently couching the issue as a matter of player health and safety, forcing the league either to follow suit or risk being perceived as not caring about player health and safety. You're ingesting smoke, so that's not usually a positive thing. It's not as simple as someone just wants to feel better after a game. "We really want to help our players. but I want to make sure the negative consequences aren't something that we'll be held accountable for years down the road". "That will be one of the subjects in the collective bargaining process, which we'd like to get into sooner rather than later". Part of the reason is because the league hopes to bundle these issues into a collective bargaining agreement, which now runs through 2020.
