Officer buys diapers for a mother caught trying to steal them”

A shoplifting call in Maryland ended with a police officer using his own money to buy the items for the suspect who was caught trying to steal them.

The woman was checking out with her infant son in her arms when she realized she couldn't afford her groceries and the diapers.

United States cop Bennet Johns used his own money to buy two packs of nappies for 15 dollars (about £11.30) when he was called to an incident at a grocery store.

That's when security officers at a Laurel, Maryland, supermarket caught her attempting to shoplift two packs of diapers, worth about $15, according to Laurel Police. His training officer took a photo of the purchase.

The Laurel Police Department released a picture of rookie Officer Bennet Johns paying for the diapers last month.

Johns joined the Laurel Police Department in May.

Johns did write her a citation for shoplifting.

The post quickly went viral with more than 1,300 shares, 5,300 reactions and nearly 400 comments.

The city of Laurel has since referred the woman to an advocacy service that helps struggling families in the area.

In a statement, the department thanked Officer Johns, who was sworn in last May "for not just fairly enforcing the law, but also showing empathy to an innocent child put in a hard situation".
