Ukraine's Move to American Thermal Coal to Boost US Economy - White House

Ukraine's Move to American Thermal Coal to Boost US Economy - White House”

Ukraine's dependence on Russian energy fell after its state-owned power generation company contracted to start receiving USA coal in late August or early September, the Department of Energy announced Monday.

Xcoal Energy & Resources inked the deal to ship 700,000 tons of thermal coal - used to produce electricity - to Ukraine by the end of the year for use by Centrenergo PJSC. The first shipment, at a cost of $113 a metric ton, is expected to leave the USA port of Baltimore in August.

The Ukrainian government's decision to purchase American thermal coal will boost the United States economy and help it establish global energy dominance, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a briefing on Monday.

"This partnership will provide Ukraine with a secure, reliable, and competitive alternative energy source, helping to stabilize an energy supply which has historically been at the mercy of the country's volatile neighbors", the official representative of the USA presidential administration said.

President Donald Trump has vowed to revive the struggling coal industry and has cited increases in USA coal exports as evidence the strategy is working.

The deal comes amid increased tensions in U.S. -Russia relations. Congress approved those because of Russian interference in the 2016 USA election and its military aggression in Ukraine and Syria. "That changes now", Energy Secretary Rick Perry said in a statement. Topics on the mid-July call included coal exports.
