Davidson queries goal to reduce migration”

Ruth Davidson has challenged Theresa May's pledge to keep immigration below 100,000 and include global students in that number.

Her comments will be seen a challenge to Mrs May and an endorsement of potential successors such as Home Secretary Amber Rudd, who was among those to cast doubt over whether the 100,000 target would be maintained.

The leader of Scottish Conservatives wants an open discussion on the pros and cons of immigration... but when Nigel Farage challenged Ruth Davidson to a debate, his call went unanswered.

"Because the party that you represent in 2010, in the general election, in 2015, in the general election and in 2017, in this snap general election - in all three manifestos pledged to reduce migration to tens of thousands a year".

"Brexit is a big reset button and should - in theory - make that much easier to do so", said Ms Davidson. "But we have to ask whether the target continues to be the right one?" Boris Johnson has previously said he thinks the policy should be dropped.

Recent polling shows that a majority of British adults say worldwide students should be allowed to work in the United Kingdom for a while after finishing their studies, and only 24% think of such students as immigrants.

Davidson is not the first senior Tory to criticise including students in the migration figures. If people don't think that students should be included in the net migration numbers, let's take them out and have a clearer picture of where we are.

The most popular non-member of the Cabinet, Davidson urged Theresa May to have a "mature conversation" about the thorny topic of immigration, noting the impact any restrictions might have on a post-Brexit Britain.

She ended the article: "The time for easy slogans is over".
