Mitch McConnell publicly slams Trump's 'excessive expectations' for Congress”

The 30-second ad spot echoes President Trump's calls to "drain the swamp" in Washington and attacks the Senate majority leader for "spending millions to attack" Moore, an apparent reference to a Politico report that the Kentucky Republican's super PAC is gearing up to spend as much as $8 million to back Sen.

During his speech, McConnell said he finds it "extremely irritating" Congress has a reputation for not getting anything done.

To summarize, the Senate majority leader seemingly blames Trump's political naïveté over the fact some might view the Republican party as ineffective in terms of its ability to push its agenda through Congress. Trump will likely not appreciate this critique, but perhaps it's something he needs to hear.

He said there have been "too many artificial deadlines" created in the public sphere, which has caused confusion over how Congress operates.

McConnell pointed out Trump has made declarations about the status of legislation that didn't reflect reality.

"Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before", McConnell said. As the House was negotiating its Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill in February, Trump declared Congress was in the "final stages" and it would be ready for "submitting" the next month. "And I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process", McConnell told the group. The bill was indeed introduced in March, but wasn't voted on until May.

One does not need a cipher to know McConnell was referring to Trump - since the president is the only one who's tried to impose "artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality of the legislature". "I think it would be helpful if the president would be a little more on message", McConnell said.

That sort of disconnect has led to Trump's expressing disappointment when bills - chief among them health care reform - fail to end up on his desk, even though, as with health care, the political reality indicated all along how hard it was going to be to pass legislation.

The White House has not yet responded to ABC News' request for comment.
