Ford F-150 Gets Boosted Fuel Economy, Tow Ratings

Ford F-150 Gets Boosted Fuel Economy, Tow Ratings”

Describing the model as smarter and more capable than its predecessor, the automaker confirmed the facelifted truck will have a best-in-class fuel economy rating when equipped with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine which develops 325 hp (242 kW) and 400 lb-ft (541 Nm) of torque.

Ford revealed in July that three of the F-150's engine options-the 3.3-liter PFDI V6, 2.7-liter EcoBoost, and 5.0-liter V8-will see notable gains in horsepower and torque output. Meanwhile, the 2.7-liter Ecoboost V-6 engine returns a segment-best, EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined.

Thanks to several improvements and a new ten-speed automatic transmission, the truck has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city / 26 mpg highway / 22 mpg combined. When combined with the 10-speed automatic transmission (y'know, then only available combination in 2018), the truck is rated at 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway with four-wheel-drive, and 20/26 mpg with two-wheel-drive. With the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and updated 5.0-liter V8, the F-150 will deliver best-in-class towing of 13,200 lb and payload capacity of 3,270 lb.

If you recall, a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V-6 replaced the base 3.5-liter engine for the 2017 model year. Models powering just the rear wheels receive a boost of 2 mpg in combined fuel economy, hitting 19/25/22 mpg. It produces 290 hp (216 kW) and 265 lb-ft (358 Nm) of torque which are increases 8 hp (6 kW) and 12 lb-ft (16 Nm), respectively. 4×2 models are rated at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, which is 2 city mpg and 1 highway and combined mpg better than the outgoing V8. With the latter, both highway and combined miles per gallon increase by 1 mpg.

With these new engines comes better fuel economy. A 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 still tops out at 18/25/21 mpg, or 17/23/19 mpg with four-wheel drive. Auto start-stop capability is now implemented no matter which engine is placed under the hood of the 2018 F-150.
