Bitcoin Soars Past $4000 in Weekend Trading
Ref. NG/CA67On August 14, 2017, Bitcoin’s trading price surpassed $4,000, representing a value that had more than quadrupled since the beginning of the year. The digital currency reached as high as $4,200 earlier in the day before settling at $4,078.08 at 5 p.m. This milestone followed a surge of nearly 40 percent in August alone, with a 40 percent growth rate over the preceding two weeks.
Reports at the time attributed the rally to several factors, including renewed interest following the August 1 fork of the currency. According to CNBC, demand from Japanese traders largely drove the price increase. Data from CryptoCompare indicated that trading involving U.S. dollars accounted for approximately 25 percent of the volume, while trades in Chinese yuan and South Korean won each made up about 12 percent. Additional gains were linked to investors repurchasing Bitcoin after the split, alongside growing attention from the Russian government.
Market interest expanded beyond individual retail investors to institutions. Around this time, Fidelity launched a new service allowing users to track their virtual currency holdings.
However, the digital currency faced potential volatility. Analysts noted that historical upticks in Bitcoin’s price and Google searches had previously led to price corrections. Additionally, another potential split of the currency loomed in November, when the second phase of an upgrade proposal known as Segregated Witness was scheduled for implementation.
