Federer pulls out of Cincinnati; Nadal to take over No. 1 ranking”

Rafael Nadal was assured a return to world number one for the first time since July, 2014 on Monday when 19-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer withdrew from this week's ATP Cincinnati Masters tournament.

Andy Murray, the current world No. 1, has not played a match since losing to Sam Querrey in the Wimbledon quarterfinals and had mixed results as the top-ranked player.

Federer said in a statement: "I am very sorry to pull out of the Western and Southern Open, as I always enjoy playing here". The 19-time grand slam champion was the only player able to deny the Spaniard at the upcoming Masters 1000 event in OH, but his decision to pull out will see Nadal return to the summit of the ATP standings when they are re-calculated on 21 August. "Unfortunately, I tweaked my back in Montreal and I need to rest this week".

Briton Murray pulled out of Cincinnati last week as he continues to recover from a hip problem.

The Spaniard, a 15-time Grand Slam victor, has spent 141 total weeks in the top spot, and became World No 1 for the first time in August 2008 after a semi-final run at Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Master leads up to the the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, which begins on 28 August.

Also missing from the W&S Open are two-time victor and current No. 1 Andy Murray, No. 4 Stan Wawrinka, five-time finalist and No. 5 Novak Djokovic, and No. 6 Marin Cilic, last year's champion.

The Spaniard had the opportunity to take the world number one spot by winning the Rogers Cup, however, he suffered a shock exit in the round of 16 against Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov.
