Defence Secretary Mattis seems to be confused over the trans troop ban”

"I'm going to wait until I get the direction from the White House and then we will study it and come up with what the policy should be", Mattis told reporters on Monday, according to The Hill.

Mattis said he had "no doubt" that the White House would be providing additional guidance, and said the Pentagon is giving military input as it studies the issue.

'There's a host of's obviously very complex'.

On July 26, Trump announced via Twitter that, following consultation with his generals and other military experts, he is not allowing or accepting transgender individuals in the military.

The current Obama-era policy remains in place for now.

He added that the Pentagon had received no White House directions that would 'indicate any harm to anybody right now'.

"I'm saying we're going to study the issue", Mattis clarified.

Mattis said he had no doubt orders from the head of U.S. government would be forthcoming, a series of guidelines to outline their new capacity.

Five transgender women employed by the u.s. army launched the August 9 lawsuit against Mr. Trump and the Pentagon in the wake of the announcement of the billionaire republican.

"Execution of the president's directive will result in an end to service by openly transgender service members and has already resulted in immediate, concrete injury to Plaintiffs by unsettling and destabilizing plaintiffs' reasonable expectation of continued service", read the complaint by The National Center for Lesbian Rights and the GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders.

The study released by the Palm Center estimates the cost to replace the transgender service members would be 114 times more than the $8.4 million to provide them care for gender transition.

The presidential announcement was made with little or no coordination with the Pentagon and during the holidays of Mr. Mattis, leaving the department out to try to give a consistent position. "But I'm not willing to sign up for the [Rand Corp.] numbers you just used [regarding active duty servicemembers], and I'm not willing to sign up for the concern any of them have, considering what the chairman said".

McCain added: 'We should all be guided by the principle that any American who wants to serve our country and is able to meet the standards should have the opportunity to do so-and should be treated as the patriots they are'.

Besides his tweets, the only other comment Trump has made was at a press gaggle last week when he said that he's doing the military "a great favor" by just implementing the ban and avoiding a "very complicated" and "very confusing" issue.

One of the apparent driving forces behind Trump's decision to ban trans personnel was the "cost".
