Pakistani flag hoisted in occupied Kashmir on Independence Day”

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and across the world observe India's Independence Day as Black Day today.

Participants of the protest rallies will wear black bands around their arms to show their hatred against India, while black flags will also be hoisted atop the buildings.

The separatist leaders, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, in a virtual diktat asked the students and teachers to "boycott" the Independence Day celebrations in schools.

Rebel groups have fought since 1989 in Indian Kashmir, demanding independence or a merger of the territory with Pakistan, and tens of thousands, mostly civilians, have been killed. In Muzaffarabad, a big protest demonstration will be held at Central Press club. "We in particular felicitate Pakistan Army that has the responsibility of protecting and safeguarding the geographical borders of Pakistan and its ideological borders as well", Geelani added.

The curbs have been imposed in Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, M.R. Gunj, and Safakadal areas of the city.

Internet and mobile phone services were suspended in the Kashmir Valley as a precautionary measure on Independence Day, officials said.

Complete internet services, including mobile and broadband, were shut down, an official said on Thursday night.

On Sunday, two youngsters - Owais Shafi and Mohammad Sayeed Bhat - were killed in security forces' action against stone-pelting mobs in Pulwama and Shopian districts respectively.
