Samsung Announces T5 Portable SSD Featuring Latest 64-Layer V-NAND

Samsung Announces T5 Portable SSD Featuring Latest 64-Layer V-NAND”

It was only a couple of years ago when Samsung first introduced its external SSD drive at CES 2015.

Samsung rates the T5's transfer speeds at up to 540 MB/s, and like all such theoretical figures this remains out of reach in the real world. Samsung says with no moving parts and a shock-resistant internal frame, "the T5 offers users peace of mind as it can withstand accidental drops of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet)".

The T5 provides sequential data transfer speeds of up to 540MB/s, and is geared toward business professionals, college students, videographers, photographers and creative professionals that require easy and instant access to their data.

The new drives will come in two colors, including "Deep Black" and "Alluring Blue", and range between 250GB and 2TB in size. The T5 is being offered in capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.

I've reviewed the earlier version of Samsung's T-series SSD drive, but today, they've announced a new version with better performance across the board. "It is the ideal portable storage product for consumers and professionals who are in search of a fast, durable and secure device". It will also be compatible with a mobile app that will be available for Android devices (iOS was not mentioned).

The T5 drives also come with USB-C connectors and support 256-bit hardware data encryption.

The T5 will include two connection cables: USB-C to C and USB-C to A, which allows for just about every device on the market to connect to the devices.

Samsung has pegged the T5's pricing and capacity to the same level as the T3, which isn't a bad deal when you consider the T5 is seriously faster. These are the same price points as the T3, except for the 250GB version is $10.00 more than the 250GB T3.
