One Nation's Hanson wears burqa to Senate, plans call for ban

One Nation's Hanson wears burqa to Senate, plans call for ban”

Senator Pauline Hanson has stunned fellow senators by wearing a burqa into parliament.

One Nation's Pauline Hanson entered question time wearing a burqa today.

The statement said Senator Hanson believed full face coverings were not only security threats at Parliament House but also in the wider community.

Senator Pauline Hanson pulls off the burqa.

"Senator Brandis, in light of the national security of this nation, will you work with me to ban the burqua in Australia".

'There have been 13 foiled national threats against us with terrorism, thee that have been successful and Australians have lost their lives. "Many Australians are very much in fear of it".

The One Nation leader has been campaigning for the burka to be banned in government buildings and situations where a person needs to be identified.

Attorney-General George Brandis hit back at Hanson for the stunt, saying it offended the "religious sensibilities" of Australians.

We have about half a million Australians in this country of the Islamic faith, and the vast majority are good, law-abiding Australians.

Parry said he had been advised by the clerk that Hanson's identity was known before she entered the chamber and he would "reflect on her mode of dress" as questions continued.

The stunt has drawn anger from the opposition benchers with crossbencher Derryn Hinch and Independent senator Cory Bernardi weighing in on the stunt which is set to shake up the debate - and Hanson wouldn't have it any other way.

'We have about 500,000 Australians in this country of the Islamic faith. "Can I appear tomorrow in fancy dress unchallenged?" he asked the president.

Hanson will move a motion in Parliament calling on the federal Government to ban the burqa.

But the Attorney-General's response, in which he called the stunt "appalling" and both "counselled and cautioned" Senator Hanson for causing offence to religious groups, received an extraordinary standing ovation from Labor and the Greens.
