Sen. Ron Johnson attends manufacturing event in Madison”

But Johnson also said he did not think the remarks, which have elicited bipartisan criticism nationwide, show that President Trump is unfit for office.

"On what grounds?" Johnson responded.

"As an elected leader we need to do our job and that is to make sure not only do we hold ourselves accountable but we hold our colleagues and our counterparts accountable, too, and that means calling out those individuals that need to be called out when they are wrong", said Sen.

Johnson said on Wednesday that he was "not entirely" comfortable with Trump's rhetoric regarding the violence. "I speak for myself".

Gov. Scott Walker said after a round table event in Green Bay that he denounces all hate, echoing his tweet on Saturday condemning violence at the rally.

"The impetus for all this revolves around the white supremacists and affiliated groups", Walker said.

House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted Tuesday after the President Trump news conference that "white supremacy is repulsive", but did not specifically address the president's comments.

"It shouldn't be something that's partisan in basis", Walker also said. "And certainly should denounce anyone no matter what their background who wants to motivate or encourage acts of violence".

"I don't think it's possible to be racist and a white nationalist and be a decent human being", he said.

Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke told the Wisconsin State Journal on Wednesday that he "completely" disagrees with Trump's assertion there are "very fine people on both sides".

President Trump responded with differing effectiveness in numerous ways, with the latest being a blame of both sides including what he has first coined the "alt-left" - the counter-protesters against white supremacists.

Steineke said "this isn't the time for moral equivalency" and would advise Trump to "stop rationalizing".

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Wednesday every elected official in the USA has a moral responsibility to condemn Trump's comments on last week's violence.

"I look at where the Trump administration is going in terms of the things they are doing on policy and the impact it has on the citizens of Wisconsin", Walker said. "I don't believe (white supremacists) have any place in any political party and we shouldn't legitimize their views by making a moral equivalent argument".

Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan, who represents Madison and south-central Wisconsin, raised impeachment as a possibility in a statement from his office that said he "never imagined that he would have to ask the President of the United States to clarify his stance on neo-Nazis". "There can be no moral ambiguity", but did not address Trump by name. "We must stand up against bigotry, racism and any violence associated with it", Vos said.
