Six people beaten up on suspicion of slaughtering bovine

Six people beaten up on suspicion of slaughtering bovine”

The New Indian Express reports that a mob of more than 50 people at Bihar's Dumra village barged into the home of Mohammad Shahabuddin on Thursday to check if he had beef.

Seven Muslims were arrested in Bihar's West Champaran district for allegedly killing a calf and consuming its meat, the police said on Friday. Stones were pelted at police personnel when they reached the spot.

Muslims who were assaulted by Hindu vigilantes for allegedly killing a cow and eating beef at home were then themselves arrested by police under a law that criminalised the insulting of religious beliefs. Qudus Kureishi, husband of the village hear, was also beaten up when he tried to intervene in the matter, Jha said.

"Initially our main task was to defuse the situation and it was due to large deployment of the police force that no untoward incident took place as mobs were descending from other villages also", the police officer said.

According to local sources in the district, some Bajrang Dal activists along with two BJP workers instigated local villagers and gathered a mob to attack Shahabuddin's house and beat up the residents but police arrived by that time and rescued them.
