Protecting your eyes critical during rare solar eclipse

Protecting your eyes critical during rare solar eclipse”

That will occur only along a narrow strip stretching from OR, through the Midwestern plains, down to SC. NBC also plans live coverage, with Lester Holt hosting special reports at 1 and 2 p.m. featuring correspondents reporting from Oregon, Illinois, Wyoming and SC.

Rodriguez has plans to check out the eclipse at home through her telescope (with solar filters, of course) while Kafle will be staking out a space in East Park, but both professors say that the Quad or Institute Park would be great places to check out the eclipse at its peak time, approximately 2:40 p.m. If you're here, you can start watching the eclipse just before 1:30 p.m. and it will last until about 4:30 p.m. It ends at 12:03 p.m.

Weather: Now, we'll be at the mercy of our weather when it comes to how well we'll be able to see it. The uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun can cause significant damage to the eye leading to blindness though.

Even if all you decide to see is the different kinds of shadows produced by the eclipse, there's also the option to watch the entire eclipse online, thanks to a livestream from NASA. You need to protect your eyes with solar eclipse glasses that have an ISO number AND the manufactures name and address on the glasses.

Live Stream - Tune in to CBS4 or go to cbsmiami.com on Monday to watch the eclipse live and safely. You can look indirectly with a pinhole projector that you can make yourself. Hours can pass before you realize the extent of the damage. If you can see any light besides the sun, it's time for new solar specs. Or grab a kitchen colander - that casts images of the eclipsed sun onto a screen at least 3 feet away.

Some schools have not changed their schedules while others have either cancelled their first day of school or allowed some form of absence for students to watch the eclipse. Additionally, everything around you should look completely dark.

Sunglasses won't work. Certified eclipse glasses or hand-held viewers are a must for direct viewing.

According to NASA, the only safe way to look directly at the sun during the phases of the eclipse, except totality, is through the use of special-purpose solar filters such as eclipse glasses.
