Mets 3B David Wright begins rehab assignment at Class A”

For the first time in almost 15 months, David Wright will play in a baseball game Tuesday night.

Almost 15 months removed from his last appearance in a major league game, the Mets icon will serve as the designated hitter for Single-A Port St. Lucie on Tuesday, the team announced. He also was dealing with a shoulder impingement during spring training, and he constantly battles spinal stenosis. Last year, the 34-year-old Wright played in only 37 games, slashing.226/.350/.438 with seven home runs and 14 RBIs over 164 plate appearances. On June 16 of last season, he underwent neck surgery to fix a herniated disc. But he recently began baseball activities at the club's complex in Florida, including taking grounders, and has told the Mets he wants to return next month.

Despite that the big-league Mets are virtually out of playoff contention, their captain has been rehabbing with the goal of playing this season.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has said recently that he is not ruling out Wright actually playing for NY before the season ends.

According to Spotrac, the Mets owe the seven-time All-Star $47 million from 2018 to 2020.
