Fired Google engineer James Damore hires prominent Republican lawyer”

A law firm representing James Damore, who was sacked from Google earlier this month for writing a controversial internal memo, is asking other former and current employees to come forward with "illegal employment practices" at Google.

Google fired Damore after he wrote an internal memo that said the lack of women in leadership roles in the tech industry was due to biological differences rather than discrimination.

"Hopefully it will show there has been a lot of political discrimination in the workplace and that needs to stop", he said in an interview with CNN Tech on August 15.He also called Google (GOOG) a "psychologically unsafe environment". Much of the rest of his missive focused on his belief that Google has a left-wing bias that "has created a politically correct monoculture that maintains its hold by shaming dissenters into silence".

Conservative lawyer Harmeet Dhillon, a member of the party-leading Republican National Committee, said on Wednesday she is representing Damore.

"Our firm represents Google employees unfairly treated at work", the tweet said. "But like any workplace that doesn't mean that anything goes", a Google spokesperson said in a statement. Dhillon's firm is also asking other Google employees to come forward with similar complaints.

Her firm has yet to file a lawsuit, but a blog post on Dhillon's website says it's looking to represent Google employees who claim to have been discriminated against for their political views.

Her firm is also suing the University of California, Berkeley, on behalf of college Republicans and a national organisation challenging the university's cancellation of a speech by conservative provocateur Ann Coulter.

It encourages responses from people who have been written up for "refusing to comply with the political orthodoxy" at Google, including by speaking out against "affirmative action" or "employment discrimination".

Google has yet to directly comment on Damore's firing. "March on Google" protests at nine of the firm's US offices had been scheduled for August 19 but organizer Jack Posobiec said the demonstrations had been postponed because of "terrorist threats" from the far left.
