It's Showtime: Prince concert film 'Sign o' The Times' gets wide release”

A rarely seen Prince concert film will get a proper airing on television thanks to Showtime.

Shot as a companion to Prince's 1987 double album, Sign o' the Times features live performances of songs including "U Got the Look" with Sheena Easton, the title cut - with its near-hypnotic though very mid-'80s groove - and the classic "Little Red Corvette".

Footage for the 84-minute concert doc was shot primarily at Prince's Paisley Park Studios.

Showtime has scheduled a September 16 USA release for the film, which features classics "Little Red Corvette" and "U Got the Look" and sees Prince accompanied on stage by Sheena Easton and drummer Sheila E. "Sign o" The Times' will stream on demand from September 17.

His band at the time featured musicians from both the Revolution, who'd backed him on Purple Rain, and the group that would become the New Power Generation.

The film got a theatrical release in late 1987, but it wasn't a box-office hit, attracting only $3 million in revenue, per Box Office Mojo, despite critical praise. The film was never re-issued on DVD in the U.S; for years, the only ways to watch it were via online rip, foreign DVD, or a surviving copy of the 1991 VHS edition.
