Tory MPs sceptical about PM's election ambitions

"Yes, there has been an terrible lot of speculation about my future which has no basis in it whatsoever", she told Dinnen, adding: "I'm in this for the long term".

Boris Johnson insists May has his "undivided backing".

Theresa May tells journalists "I'm here for the long term".

Mrs May's latest comments come just hours after she revealed she intends to stay on as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to fight the next election.

"My own guess is they won't, but of course I am just one voice out of many", he told the BBC.

She added: "I think it's going to be hard for Theresa May to lead us into the next general election. we have got to think about how we renew our franchise".

In a series of television interviews last night Mrs May insisted she was "not a quitter" and said she wanted to lead the Conservatives into another election, saying: "I'm in this for the long term".

Grant Shapps, the former Conservative party chairman, said May could not jump straight from throwing away a Conservative majority to announcing an intention to remain as leader well into the next decade, signalling she would have to prove herself.

"Let's get some performance, let's get some delivery for the British people and then let's see where we are, rather than vice versa", Mr Shapps added.

The prime minister, whose failed attempt to win a landslide in this year's general election in June threw her future into doubt, said that she intends to go on and on.

"We need to get Brexit done. What me and my government are about is not just delivering on Brexit but delivering a brighter future for the United Kingdom".

"She's ideally placed to deliver a great outcome for our country and then deliver what we all want to see, which is this exciting agenda of global Britain". I think she gets it.

However, while there has so far been little appetite for an immediate change among Tory MPs, most had assumed that she would stand down after Brexit and before any further general election.

The next general election is not scheduled to take place until May 2022, by which point Mrs May - if she stayed in Downing Street - would have been prime minister for almost six years.

Mrs May's statement that she is "not a quitter", made during a trade trip to Japan, has provoked a growing backlash among some party colleagues. She really wants to deliver it.
