Mike Zimmer says Vikings-Saints not about Adrian Peterson”

New Orleans Saints running back Adrian Peterson played the first decade of his National Football League career with the Minnesota Vikings and will take center stage when his new and old teams open their 2017 seasons against each other Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. It's going to be pretty fun.

While the arrival of Peterson bolsters an already solid backfield that also added Alvin Kamara through the draft, the Saints will need to make do without 2016 starting receiver Brandin Cooks, who now suits up for New England. He signed with the Saints shortly after the 2017 schedule was released. "This game isn't about Adrian Peterson".

Minnesota opted against picking up Peterson's $18 million contract option in February, and the future Hall of Fame running back chose the Saints as his next team.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer isn't buying into all the hype. The Saints are right behind the Vikings in the power rankings, sitting at No. 21.

Rhodes and Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen, though, were happy to talk about Peterson. "I've known him for eight years now".

SPECIAL TEAMS: Former Saints kicker Kai Forbath beat out competition for the kicking job, and he's accurate, although he doesn't have a big leg. Ryan Quigley's solid if not spectacular as a punter, and the combination of Jerick McKinnon and Rodney Adams is very risky in the return game. "It's going to be electric".

Peterson is sharing duty in the backfield with Mark Ingram.

Minnesota's fourth-year coach hopes his team won't get caught up in this plot, one that's probably too big to be a subplot considering how much Peterson contributed to the Vikings during his 10-year Twin Cities stay.

"Amazing plays, is all I can say", Cook said. "When he was here, we had a couple of conversations that I told him I'm not going to back down from him".
