Malaysia blocks Steam access due to Fight of Gods”

Original story, September 8: The Malaysian government have banned access to Steam, in its entirerty, across the country.

According to Gadgets 360, PQube issued a press statement, stating that they were disappointed with the decision but would be working with Valve to resolve the issue... It's not the first such game to take that angle-Faith Fighter, which enables you to "choose your belief and kick the shit out of your enemies", caused a stir almost a decade ago-but it may be the first to so obviously capitalize on the easy and inevitable controversy caused by such an up-front inclusion of Christianity.

Malaysian gamers are having a bit of trouble expanding their PC gaming library through Steam thanks to the government.

Various religious figures have commented against the game, calling on the government to ban it. "For the first time ever, gods, holy spirits and mythological characters from around the globe and throughout history will clash in an explosive 2D fighter where the entire world is at stake", the game's description reads on Steam. "From reports we are reading, this is due to a single game that conflicts with local laws. We apologize for any inconvenience".

The statement goes on to say that "the game is not promoting any religious agenda and is not created to offend", and that the developers respect the decision of anyone who decides not to play their game. The game includes several deities from many pantheons including Zuse, Anubis, Odin, and most controversial Jesus, and Buddha.

Earlier today, it was reported that the MCMC has contacted Valve and requested that Fight of Gods be geoblocked for Malaysians within the next 24 hours, or risk further action being taken.

Popular online gaming marketplace Steam will be unblocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) after the portal agreed to stop downloads of the game "Fight of Gods" in Malaysia. It feels that it degrades religions and threatens racial unity.

Publisher PQube, meanwhile, has said it never received any communications from any Malaysian officials, so perhaps Keruak just assumed that PQube was keeping tabs on all blanket statements coming out of Malaysia. One can only imagine how the Muslim community would respond if the prophet Mohammad from the Qur'an appeared in Fight of Gods.

"We are committed in protecting our consumers' interest and will not compromise with any quarters that degrade or disrespect the religious sanctity and interracial harmony of our country", it said.

We'll update if Steam really does end up blocking the game.
