RED's Hydrogen Holographic Smartphone Uses Leia Light Field Display Tech

RED's Hydrogen Holographic Smartphone Uses Leia Light Field Display Tech”

What RED did not announce, however, is what that technology actually involves, even as the $1,195 Hydrogen One phone went up for pre-order essentially sight unseen. Leia - yes, like in Star Wars - describes itself as "the leading provider of light field holographic display solutions for mobile".

According to the report, the technology RED is working on comes from a partnership with a display solutions startup named Leia.

While RED hasn't unveiled how the holographic-display appears on its smartphone, the company has explained more details regarding how it works. The company is mostly know for its work in light field holographic display. The company commercializes the LCD-based mobile screens those are capable of synthesizing lightfield holographic content while retaining the usual functionality of the display.

So the general idea behind their technology is that the screen on the Hydrogen One will be able to project 3D objects that you're able to view from different angles based on your physical position. Leia's innovation is making this work while also keeping the traditional 2D display capabilities undisturbed, so that you can switch between both modes depending on what you're viewing. The user will then be able to interact with gestures within the "dynamic lightfield" instead of touching the display.

It's a bit hard to imagine, but Leia Inc. did publish a short concept video on YouTube in 2015 showing off how it might look like, as first spotted by The Verge. It is claimed that the layer does not compromise the quality of the display, battery consumption or thickness for the non-holographic use. Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, said he was "pretty impressed" by the display, but that it "definitely wasn't perfect" with some stuttering and light bleed issues.

To cinematographers, it's the secret sauce to one of the most exciting smartphones in forever - we're talking about people who make movies with 8K machines and glass. "Available on RED Hydrogen".

A few months ago, RED, a Cinematic camera company, made a surprise announcement that it would be launching its first smartphone next year.

"This is an incredible opportunity for both companies and a ideal marriage", says Jim Jannard, Founder, and Chairman of RED.
