New 'Star Trek' TV series based its Klingons on Trump supporters

New 'Star Trek' TV series based its Klingons on Trump supporters”

Showrunner Aaron Harberts revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming CBS All Access series will be tackling today's political climate, using the Klingons to "help us really look at certain sides of ourselves and our country". "Do we want to change?" he asked. There's also the question of just because you reach your hand out to someone, do they have to take it? The new show is set ten years before the original series and will deal with the origin of the Federation-Klingon conflict. By the time "Star Trek: #The Next Generation" rolled around, coinciding with a thaw in American-Soviet relations, the Klingons had become unruly allies, with even one, Lieutenant Worf, serving on the Enterprise.

It's not entirely clear what conclusions Star Trek: Discovery will come to about all this in its first season, although Harberts notes that the main characters are forced to be self-reflective more so than the characters in any previous iteration of Star Trek.

The producer also noted that its war theme would cause Starfleet to "examine their ideas and ethical rules of conflict and conduct".

Legal Insurrection readers may recall my post on Axanar, the Star Trek fan-film that drew the legal ire of CBS. I nearly wish this idea wasn't for an episode where an omnipotent being made them all wear hats and was for one where they visited a Planet of Hats, a trope Star Trek loves. Showrunners are now filming the 13th episode of the CBS All Access drama, and showrunner Gretchen J. Berg points out that President Trump's relations with North Korea will be reflected, EW reports.

"North Korea is in our thoughts as we finish the series", Harberts told the magazine. Later, he reiterated that the show is a "commentary on our own divided nation - in terms of Trump supporters and non-Trump supporters". "But how do you end conflict when both sides have such strong opinions?"

Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center and the Vulcan Science Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere this autumn on CBS All Access in the U.S. and Netflix in the UK.
