Shorten to attend 'Yes' vote rally in Syd”

"We're blown away by the response", Cat Rose from Community Action Against Homophobia said.

"No" campaign supporters have previously come under fire for allegedly using the children of same-sex couples to bolster their argument against marriage equality.

They'll have the option to tick a "yes" or "no" box and the result will be announced on November 15.

The survey will not have the power to legalise same-sex marriage but it could lead to a vote in parliament if the majority of Australians support the change.

"It is a lack of loving commitment", Mr Turnbull told the NSW Liberals and Nationals for Yes campaign launch in Sydney.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Bill Shorten today appeared at Sydney's Marriage Equality rally where he gave credit to Malcolm Turnbull's support as well as those who have been fighting this battle for a long time. "Let's climb it together, today", he said.

"Many people will vote "yes", as I will, because they believe the right to marry is a conservative ideal as much as any other principle", he said.

Turnbull was joined by New South Wales Liberals, including the former New South Wales (NSW) premiers Barry O'Farrell and Nick Greiner, former NSW Coalition leaders Kerry Chikarovski, Peter Debnam and John Brogden, as well as Sydney city councillor Christine Forster, who is the sister of the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. "Why then shouldn't those same rights now be extended to marriage?".

Turnbull has said before that he supports same-sex marriage, but had not signaled he would publically campaign for a "yes" vote. It includes the Australian Christian Lobby and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

"If we win this survey it won't be because of a particular politician or politicians, it'll be because Australia has said it's time to make marriage equality a reality." .

"We can't be complacent, we can't take anything for granted", he said.

"My mum would really like to have a legal son-in-law", Madden added.

Thousands of people have rallied in Brisbane for same-sex marriage, with several streets in the city blocked off for the event at Queens Gardens in the CBD. Police declined to comment on the numbers at both rallies.

The former Prime Minister told The Australian any changes to the social institution of marriage will result in wider consequences for the country and that the right of a child to have a mother and father should be preserved.
