Virginia inept in all phases as in rolls, 34-17

Virginia inept in all phases as in rolls, 34-17”

Leading 27-10 early in the fourth quarter, in appeared to be on the verge of breaking the game open when Greg Gooch and Robert McCray III combined to make a huge defensive play.

Overall I don't think the Hoosiers have any chance of losing this game, but they have to come out strong early, and find a run game and a running back who can get yards effectively quickly.

If only it could have all led to a win.

A key reason, to Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall: "Indiana was more opportunistic in the short fields they had in relation to the short fields we had". "He was moving the team, so we just said roll with it". The ensuing fumble was recovered by McCray III and taken to the house, giving the Hoosiers a 33-10 advantage. Four plays later, Ramsey ran for his touchdown. The Hoosiers took 5:42 off the clock on their ensuing possession, only stalling when Micah Kiser broke up a pass on fourth-and-goal at the UVa 3. But when J-Shun Harris returned a punt 44 yards for a score for IN, U.Va.'s comeback chances were squashed.

The play put the Hoosiers (1-1) back up 17 and about guaranteed Virginia (1-1) wouldn't be 2-0 after two games for a fifth straight season. "And I felt like when we got in the locker room, a lot of guys did that after the game and they were exhaling with a good thing to build off of towards week two". That shift in field position is huge, especially in a game like this. We didn't have as many points come out of that as necessary.

"I didn't think it would be that hard (to run the ball)", Benkert said.

Virginia (1-1) concludes this opening three-game homestand next Saturday versus CT.

Virginia: Kurt Benkert finished his busy day with 259 yards passing with a touchdown and no interceptions. The incompletions were often on longer throws, a nod to UVa's inability to create explosion vertically. Oakes is now the leader in field goals made all time for IU, after breaking the previous record with his first-half field goal.

What a different nine days makes. We just have fun out there.

Virginia scored first with a 22-yard field goal from freshman A.J. Mejia in the 2nd quarter, but in scored seventeen unanswered points to lead 17-3 at halftime. Cobbs had a highlight-play finish after catching the ball over the middle and bouncing off several tackles en route to the end zone. "I wish I wouldn't have put as much air on it". "That's what I'm best at doing so I try to do that out there".

"We had talked about that, and I was told to go through my progressions, and if it wasn't there, take care of the ball and go make plays, " Ramsey said.

IN held a 17-3 lead at halftime.

Defensively, Virginia smothered IN senior quarterback Richard Lagow, who threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns against Ohio State. Coming off a performance against Ohio State where Lagow passed for 410 yards and three touchdowns, the lackluster showing was unexpected, especially when factoring in the additional time in had to prepare for Virginia after playing on a Thursday night. He final throw was intercepted by Juan Thornhill.

Ramsey, meanwhile, guided the Hoosiers to points on five of his first eight possessions.

Completing his first 11 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, the offense found its rhythm under Ramsey's guidance. He also ran for a TD.

IN struggled to find a really good running game. "It was like "Are you kidding me?' But I went up and down our sidelines, and I said 'Defense get ready" because I didn't know what was going to happen".

Expect Allen to keep playing both guys but considering Indiana's questions on the offensive line and running the ball, Ramsey provides greater mobility and an extra threat as a runner.
