Scorching new Audi RS4 Avant uncovered with 444bhp

Scorching new Audi RS4 Avant uncovered with 444bhp”

That power comes from a six-cylinder engine, replacing the V8 used by the outgoing RS4. The wheelarch blisters make the RS4 60mm wider overall than a standard A4 Avant, and the 19-inch forged alloy wheels (20-inch items will be optional) fill the arches with little room to spare.

The extrovert look continues at the rear, with a spoiler atop the hatch as well as a re-profiled bumper housing a substantial diffuser element and a pair of large oval tailpipes finished in black. Matching the headlamps, the LED rear lights are flanked by vents leading from those swollen rear wheelarches. Nogaro Blue also returns as a paint colour, this auto sharing more in common with the RS2 that originally bore the famous hue than the last RS4 to wear it. (601 Nm) of torque, the new unit delivers the same amount of power but a significant 125 lb. -ft.

As previously suspected, the new model forgoes a V8 and switches back to a turbocharged V6, like the original model in 2000.

0-62mph takes 4.1 seconds and top speed is limited to 155mph, though this can be raised to 174mph as part of the optional RS Dynamic pack. An eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox is standard and Audi says the shift points have been optimised for the RS4. It's around 17 percent easier on fuel consumption, in fact, with combined economy of 32.1mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions of 199g/km.

An 80kg weight reduction helps this - and bodes well for how the new RS4 will drive, too.

Top speed is nominally limited to 155 miles per hour (249 km/h), though buyers can order the new Audi Sport model with an optional RS dynamic package that raises it to 174 miles per hour (280 km/h). Standard suspension drops the vehicle 7mm lower than a cooking A4 on sports suspension, while adaptive dampers, ceramic brakes and variable ratio steering are all found on the options list. Ceramic brakes will be optional, too. The driver sits behind a flat-bottomed steering wheel adorned with the RS emblem - also seen on the gearshift gate and illuminated door sill trims.

Audi's Virtual Cockpit is standard, and like the RS3 and RS5, has specific Audi Sport graphics. These include g-forces, torque and tire pressures.

A common mechanical package will be found in all three. Powered by the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the recently revealed RS5 coupe, this latest junior super-estate has made its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the first deliveries scheduled for early 2018.

The new RS4 can be ordered from the autumn onwards with pricing starting in Europe at 79,800 euros - expect a United Kingdom price and spec soon.
