Bulls sign big man Diamond Stone

Bulls sign big man Diamond Stone”

The search for a permanent National Basketball Association home continues for former Maryland center Diamond Stone.

Stone, who came to College Park being mentioned as a potential lottery pick and left after his freshman year as a second-round selection, has signed with the Chicago Bulls, the team reported on its website Thursday.

For the Bulls, it's not much of a risk at all to sign Stone to a deal that's not fully guaranteed over the next couple of seasons.

The 20-year-old Stone led his high school team to four straight state championships and also won a gold medal at the 2014 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship.

Stone, a Milwaukee native, was named AP Big Ten Newcomer of the Year and earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors.

Stone averaged 1.4 points in seven games with the Los Angeles Clippers last season after being acquired in a 2016 draft-night trade with the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent the majority of his time last season in the G-League, where he played for both the Salt Lake City and Santa Cruz. A report said he received a partial guarantee of $50,000, and would likely be assigned to Chicago's G-League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls.

A Maryland product, Stone was then traded to the Hawks in the offseason and waived in late July.

It will be an uphill challenge for Stone to make the roster out of training camp, with a crowded frontcourt situation that includes veteran Robin Lopez, the probable return of restricted free agent Nikola Mirotic and the need to develop youngsters Cristiano Felicio, Bobby Portis and rookie Lauri Markkanen.

It's possible more opportunity opens up for Stone and others as the Bulls' season goes on. Lopez is very underrated and could be a big help to a playoff team.
