Husker Du Drummer Grant Hart Dies at 56”

Punk band Husker Dus drummer Grant Hart has passed away at the age of 56, according to reports.

Ken Shipley, who runs the band's record label Numero Group, told The Associated Press that Hart died Wednesday of cancer at his home in St. Paul, Minnesota. "My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant's family, friends, and fans around the world", his bandmate Bob Mould wrote on Facebook.

Today's Morning Edition music is from "2541" by Grant Hart from his 1989 solo album "Intolerance".

News of Hart's passing spread quickly on social media and became a trending topic in the United States. "Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember".

The Minneapolis band was a highly influential band during the 1980s.

Variety has reached out to a representative for Husker Du.

Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic once rebutted accolades of his band's innovation, crediting the alternative rock band instead.

Husker Du's special box set Save Young Du is being released on 10 November, and will feature the band's earliest recordings and performances.
