NFAI acquires 6-hour documentary on Mahatma Gandhi

NFAI acquires 6-hour documentary on Mahatma Gandhi”

"These acquisitions are important as negatives are the best source of a film and any number of positives can be developed out of these", said NFAI director Prakash Magdum, while addressing a news conference here on Wednesday. "This will take care of compiling the database of films, books and documentation at the NFAI", Mr. Magdum said.

Pune: In one of its biggest acquisitions lately, the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) has procured 162 films from Famous Cine Laboratory, Mumbai, of which over 125 films are original or dupe negatives.

The NFAI will now possess films prints which it previously did not have in any format, including "Faslah" (Hindi, 1976), "Amarsingh Rathod" (Hindi, 1957), "Aalay Toofan Daryala" (Marathi, 1973) and "Maitri Ghar" (Nepali, 1966). A top NFAI official, on condition of anonymity, said majority of the films disposed of had "no heritage value" whatsoever. "The collection also includes Nepali films", the organization said.

Nearly 44 of these films belong to the black and white era. Also, the prints of several global acquisitions like films by Sergei Eisenstein (Battleship Potemkin), Vittorio De Sica (Bicycle Thieves aka The Bicycle Thief), Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), Roman Polanski (Knife in the Water) and Andrzej Wajda (Ashes and Diamonds), were missing. Apart from a large chunk of Hindi films of various eras, 34 Gujarati, 15 Marathi and 6 Bhojpuri films have been acquired by NFAI.

The collection includes 44 black-and-white films.

One of the gems in the collection is the original negatives of Mahatma, a six-hour documentary footage of Mahatma Gandhi by Vithalbhai Jhaveri, a filmmaker-cum-photographer, who was also an associate of Gandhi.

The collection also includes Kon Ichikawa's renowned film Tokyo Olympiad (1965), which documents the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Other highlights are original negatives of Ezra Mir's "Sitara" (1939), Mani Kaul's "Uski Roti" (1969), K.A. Abbas' "Saat Hindustani" (1969) - which incidentally was the debut film of megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar-starrer "Kohinoor" (1960), Mehmood's "Kunwara Baap" (1974), Raj Kapoor-and-Nargisa-starrer "Amber" (1952), among others.
