LA deputy arrested on suspicion of rape at women's jail

LA deputy arrested on suspicion of rape at women's jail”

McDonnell said one of the female inmates allegedly assaulted filed a complaint, and a subsequent investigation revealed that there were two alleged victims.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual contact with female inmates, authorities announced Thursday.

Giancarlo Scotti, a 10-year-veteran, faces charges of rape under color of authority and oral copulation under color of authority, McDonnell told reporters during a news conference. The department said in a news release that the deputy is facing "serious allegations of criminal misconduct while on duty". McDonnell says the alleged incident occurred in the early morning hours Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, and one of the inmates reported it to a jail instructor.

The Association of Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, Scotti's union, urged the public to withhold judgment unless the allegations are proven but said there should be "zero tolerance for any law enforcement officer who is proven to have taken advantage of anyone who is in custody".

"Crime of this nature is horrific", Mr McDonnell said. "Criminal misconduct, especially criminal misconduct that preys upon a vulnerable population, will not be tolerated and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law". "We have a public obligation to follow the evidence and the facts".

Criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case, but Scotti is scheduled to make his first court appearance on October 5, according to McDonnell. At this time there is no suggestion that other personnel were involved, Mr McDonnell said, noting that the women were alone in apparent violation of a department policy stipulating that male deputies entering cells holding female inmates be accompanied by a female deputy. "It's disgusting to us, to anyone who wears a badge". It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
