Martinez's 1st-half hat trick leads Atlanta by Revs 7-0”

A nightmare of a first half for the Revolution set the stage for its worst loss in club history, a 7-0 annihilation at the hands of expansion Atlanta United FC on Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.

Enjoy this while you can, because scouts overseas will be salivating at the prospect of Atlanta's Martinez and teammates Hector Villalba and Miguel Almiron.

Atlanta's Josef Martinez scored Atlanta's first three goals of the game, starting in the second minute of play when he capped off a give-and-go with Miguel Almiron.

From there, Atlanta (12-8-6) never looked back.

New England were reduced to 10 men in the 16th minute as midfielder Xavier Kouassi was shown a straight red card.

The away side were down to nine within just 38 first half minutes, Je-Vaughn Watson seeing red for a handball while Antonio Mlinar Delamea had an early bath for handling the ball in the box.

Martinez added two more goals on penalty kicks - eight minutes apart - for a 3-0 lead.

Goal number six emerged in the 73rd minute when Chris McCann pounced on a Teal Bunbury giveaway and fed Asad, who ripped a low skipping drive that beat Cropper at the far post.

While everything was all smiles and joy in last night's big win, the only negative for Atlanta United came from defender Leandro Martín González Pirez picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute of the game.

The win lifted Atlanta into fifth in the Eastern Conference, while New England are eighth.

Atlanta United returns to action on Saturday against the Orlando City Lions for its third game of a six-game homestand in the month of September.

The game was the second at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and drew a crowd of 42,511.
