Trump Didn't Know Hurricanes Came as Strong Category 5 Before Irma

Trump Didn't Know Hurricanes Came as Strong Category 5 Before Irma”

Including the nursing home deaths, at least 25 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in SC and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed.

Hurricane Irma was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin and kept its speed as a Category 5 hurricane for three days as it wreaked havoc across the Caribbean before being downgraded as it made landfall in Florida.

"The initial investigation has determined that the facility's air conditioning system was not fully functional", the city of Hollywood, Florida, said in a statement.

"We need to know what happened to her", she said.

A statement from the nursing home, the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, confirmed that it had a "prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility's air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane".

Police checked 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Hollywood on Wednesday.

The president couldn't resist injecting a political flavor into his visit, telling reporters in Fort Myers that he was hopeful that Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a two-term Republican, would run for the Senate, where Democrat Bill Nelson is up for re-election next year.

"FPL has got to have a better plan for power", he said, referring to the state's largest utility, Florida Power & Light.

"Things look real damaged from the air, but when you clear the trees and all the debris, it's not much damage to the houses", said Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers.

"I am outraged over the deaths of eight Floridians at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Broward County and I am demanding answers as we furiously investigate this bad loss of life", Scott said in a statement on Saturday.

"We're certainly all very disappointed that something like this could've taken place", Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy told CNN.

The nursing home has a history of safety violations and citations, including two for not following generator regulations in 2014 and 2016.

The nursing home eventually evacuated all of its patients Wednesday morning at the order of the responding crews.

In a statement, nursing home administrator Jorge Carballo said, "We are devastated by these losses".

Across the street from the nursing home sat a fully air-conditioned hospital, Memorial Regional.

Paramedics rushed to evacuate the sweltering facility, but four more nursing home patients died in hospitals. Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Story said there were "a number of critical patients".

Facing a situation that was out of control, doctors and fire officials ultimately made a decision to transfer all the patients to the hospital, where dozens were treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat exhaustion, officials said. When asked by emergency workers whether they had any medical needs or emergencies, center officials "did not request assistance or indicate any medical emergency existed", Sharief said.

At 4 a.m., firefighters were sent back to the facility to transport a patient reportedly experiencing breathing problems, police said.

"There is no reason whatsoever those individuals should have been in a home that hot for that many days", Flores said.

The hospital has set up a hotline, 954-265-1074, so that families of nursing home residents can check on their loved ones.

"Up to and through the evacuation, protocol was followed", the release from The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said.

"Approximately 150 facilities out of the almost 700 (nursing) facilities in the state do not now have full power services restored", the statement said. "And they suffered greatly", he added.

The governor's office said Tuesday "the facility reported to the AHCA [Agency for Health Care Administration] that they had power and access to fans and spot coolers". Federal prosecutors said that Michel received kickbacks as part of the deal and that some of the patients came from assisted living facilities that he owned.
