Boko Haram slaughters Islamic scholar, 4 others in Borno village”

At least 12 were killed and injured 26 by suspected suicide bombers on Monday in northeast Nigeria's state of Borno, epicenter of the ultra-hardliners militant Boko Haram insurgency, the chairman of the local emergency agency said.

Details of the attack in Konduga, a central town in Borno, the state capital, was still sketchy.

The first explosion took place Monday morning in the village of Mashalari, as an NGO delivered aid, killing 15 people and injuring 43.

"It happened during aid distribution by an [non-governmental organization], when people had gathered to receive donations", one rescue worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Press TV.

Attacks by the group killed at least 223 civilians in Nigeria and 158 in Cameroon since April, double the number of civilian deaths in the five months leading up to April.

Amnesty International says Boko Haram attacks since April have killed almost 400 people in Nigeria and Cameroon - double the figure of the previous five months.

"We have dispatched our team to the scene", he said.

The group claimed an attack on August 16 in Konduga, during which three female attackers blew up their explosives outside a camp for displaced persons.

The UN says the humanitarian crisis in Nigeria's north-east is one of the most severe in the world today, with 8.5 million people in need of life-saving aid in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, out of whom 6.9 million are targeted for humanitarian assistance.

Communication networks in the area have also been cut off by Boko Haram.

According to the United Nations, an estimated 2.7 million people in the region have fled their homes due to Boko Haram.
