Ryanair cancellations leaving passengers up in the air

Ryanair cancellations leaving passengers up in the air”

Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers sent emails to the first affected passengers on Friday, giving them the choice of a refund or an alternative flight, and has so far issued cancellation notices up until Wednesday.

Ryanair said that the cancellations affect about 2% of its daily operations, with hundreds of flights cancelled over the weekend, after the airline suddenly introduced the temporary cancellations on Friday.

The move could see up to 400,000 passengers having to scramble around for last-minute alternate travel plans.

Some have alleged the airline, based in Ireland, is trying to steer customers away from claiming compensation by not making the offer clear on its website.

What went wrong at Ryanair?

"We have messed up in the planning of pilot holidays and we're working hard to fix that".

Ryanair has said as many as 50 flights a day will have to be cancelled over the next six weeks.

Previously, staff holiday leave ran from 1 April each year, but the airline is shifting that so it runs from 1 December instead.

Ryanair said air traffic control delays, strikes, bad weather and a backlog of annual leave to be taken by pilots and cabin crew has led to punctuality falling to below 80 per cent over the last two weeks.

The amount you'll get depends on the distance of your flight, how long you were/would have been delayed in arriving at your final destination and how much notice you were given of your flight being cancelled - see How much you'll get for full info.

If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled under European Union rules to "rerouting, under comparable transport conditions, to your final destination at the earliest opportunity".

The page will be continually updated throughout the six weeks of mayhem, so it's worth keeping an eye on if you've a later Ryanair flight booked.

"We advise customers to check the email address used to make their booking", he says.

"Ryanair cancelling many flights at short notice will cause huge inconvenience and great distress for its passengers", it said.

"We apologise sincerely to all affected customers for these cancellations".

Hannah Maundrell, Editor in Chief of money.co.uk said: "If your flight has been cancelled, ask for a refund".

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled?

If you are affected, it's vital you claim additional compensation from Ryanair.

Someone quite rightly pointed out that this wasn't good enough as people needed to be given a chance to make alternative arrangements.

Some insurers set their own timescales as to when cover kicks in, for example if you're delayed by at least 24 hours.
