House Speaker Joe Straus calls for removal of 'inaccurate' Confederate plaque”

AUSTIN - It didn't have the drama of a crane being brought in to haul away a monument, but Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Tuesday called for the removal of a Confederate plaque from the state Capitol building, a small but significant move in a yearslong debate on the prominence of confederate symbols on the Capitol grounds.

In the month since white supremacist protesters clogged Charlottesville streets, leaving one woman dead and dozens injured, cities across Texas have retired a a remarkable number of statues memorializing Confederate soldiers.

Eva B. Long, president of the Texas division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy but speaking as a "concerned Texan" and not for the organization, told the Statesman last month that she hopes the plaque stays, calling it an important piece of Texas history. He says Texans aren't "well-served by incorrect information about our history". In this letter sent Tuesday morning to the state preservation board, Speaker Straus made an official request for the plaque to be removed.

Straus added in his letter that "Confederate monuments and plaques are understandably important to many Texans" but stressed the importance of such landmarks being "accurate and appropriate".

Straus previously called for all symbols on the Capitol grounds to be reviewed for historical accuracy.

"The Children of the Confederacy Creed plaque does not meet this standard", Straus wrote.

Representatives for Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on whether they think the plaque should be removed. Instead of trying to bury our past, we must learn from it and ensure it doesn't happen again. Texans should expect to see an accurate depiction of history when they visit their state Capitol. "So that could be a solution", said Siapantas. Patrick also criticized the overnight removal of a Confederate monument at the University of Texas.

It's unclear if Straus' effort can be fully executed-as he also called for other remnants of the so-called "Lost Cause" to come down-but his statement comes as several other states and even members of the federal government are leading efforts to take down Confederate monuments and statues around the country. A display was setup at the Briscoe center for American history to explain why the statues were made and how they ended up on the south campus mall. The other members of the Texas State Preservation Board are well educated, honest folks. The issue has not been placed on any agenda because no board meetings have been scheduled.
