Use of nuclear weapon unthinkable: United Nations chief Antonio Guterres”

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres kicked off the United Nations General Assembly's annual debate on Tuesday by warning that we're living in "a world in pieces", and some very thinly veiled jabs at the current USA leader's efforts to solve the biggest problems on the planet.

In his opening address to the general debate, the General Assembly president insisted on the need to have a world of peace and to recalibrate efforts to achieve it.

The UN Security Council has unanimously imposed nine rounds of sanctions on North Korea since 2006 and Guterres appealed for the 15-member body to maintain its unity on North Korea. "But today global anxieties about nuclear weapons are at the highest level since the end of the Cold War". Speaking to presidents, prime ministers and monarchs at the opening of the General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting, the United Nations chief put "nuclear peril" as the leading global threat, warning that "we must not sleepwalk our way into war".

With regard to climate change and controlling carbon gas emissions, Guterres said the science was "unassailable".

Although I would like to speak about achievements and congratulate you for meeting your global commitments, I must refer to the persistence of conflicts as an ugly reality, said the General Assembly president when welcoming leaders from around the world. Many world leaders were getting their first chance to hear and meet Trump.

"A vicious cycle of persecution, discrimination, radicalization and violent repression has led more than 400,000 desperate people to flee, putting regional stability at risk", Guterres said in the prepared remarks.

The president of the General Assembly harbors hopes that the documents adopted in the high-level forum will chart the course of the United Nations to address the most urgent global challenges.

Brazilian President Michel Temer, charged last week with obstruction of justice and leading a criminal organization, continued the tradition.

'We need viable global frameworks that can be implemented by people - and for people - in real time'.

And Trump said all responsible nations must work together to confront terrorists and "the Islamic extremists that inspire them". Brazil is part of a group with Germany, India and Japan seeking permanent seats on the council. Myanmar's Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, has found her reputation tarnished for not speaking out forcefully on the crisis or doing more to rein in the military. She invited diplomats to see some areas for themselves.

"We are all shocked by the dramatic escalation of sectarian tensions in Myanmar's Rakhine state", said Guterres.

He called on Myanmar authorities to stop military operations against the Muslim Rohingya minority and to allow immediate access to humanitarian aid. "They must also address the grievances of the Rohingya, whose status has been left unresolved for far too long", he said.

The remaining three major threats to humanity, named by the UN Secretary General, were the growing inequality, the issue of migrants and the dark side of technological progress. The world leaders gathered as Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm, smashed the small Caribbean nation of Dominica with 160 miles per hour winds. The storm was on a track to strike Puerto Rico on Wednesday. "But scientists are clear that such extreme weather is precisely what their models predict will be the new normal of a warming world", he said, noting that mega-hurricanes, superstorms and rain bombs are added to the vocabulary to describe what is happening.
