ESPN Airs the Anthem on Monday Night Football, Only Two Players Protest

ESPN Airs the Anthem on Monday Night Football, Only Two Players Protest”

ESPN has reversed plans not to televise the national anthem prior to tonight's "Monday Night Football" game after the tragic events that unfolded overnight in Las Vegas.

The networks did not show instances of National Football League fans booing or screaming at protesting players. A spokesman said ESPN chose to televise the pregame ceremonies for the Week 1 Vikings-Saints matchup due to the September 11 anniversary and again for the Week 2 Cowboys-Cardinals game in the wake of the weekend's national anthem statements throughout the league.

The decision comes after the network had previously stated its intention of returning to its practice of not airing the national anthem, after showing it last week in the midst of widespread player protests in response to comments by President Trump.

"As we have in previous broadcasts of NFL games from London, Fox will show the national anthem as well as "God Save the Queen" live", according to spokesman Eddie Motl.

The Chiefs have had players participate in their own way in recent weeks including cornerback Marcus Peters who is often seen riding a stationary bike during the singing of the national anthen. It wasn't until the halftime show that Fox showed a clip of Saints coach Sean Payton taking a knee with his players.

In a speech on September 23, Trump challenged NFL owners to fire players who do not stand during the national anthem.

"MNF" producer Jay Rothman explained that the network wouldn't show the anthem live during a preseason conference call with reporters, but so far that plan has been scrapped in all but one week.

This article has been updated with networks' coverage of the national anthem Sunday.
